Dornoch Beach Wheelchairs Safeguarding Policy Statement

Dornoch Beach Wheelchairs (DBW.)

At DBW we believe that all our service users have the right to care and protection from harm and that their personal interests, dignity and respect are safeguarded.  We recognise that safeguarding protected groups is everyone’s responsibility and many wheelchair users are protected adults.

This is because they may not be able to protect themselves sufficiently from abuse or exploitation by others because of the nature of their disability. DBW has a duty to uphold the legislation and procedures set out in The Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007.

As a registered charity and to ensure our service users are kept safe from harm our members are carefully selected, screened and trained to meet the requirements attached to their roles.

The procedures below are intended to support this legislation and, in so doing, will also provide reassurance to our service users, group members and those other parties with a vested interest in Dornoch Beach Wheelchairs.

Safeguarding Procedures

Selection and Screening

All applicants including Trustees will be asked to complete an application form including a self-declaration in relation to any ongoing enquiries or outstanding convictions.  Shortlisted applicants will be asked to attend an interview and provide references which will be taken up prior to appointment.

Training and supervision

Induction training will be proportionate to the role covering DBW aims, confidentiality, safeguarding as well as health and safety matters.  Beach Wheelchair Assistants will also be trained in the process of issuing wheelchairs to users and their carers.

Training continues alongside experienced members until the new member is deemed competent.  Regular training updates will ensure the team is up-to-date with new equipment and good practice with feedback provided to support performance.

Reporting Abuse

In the event of a safeguarding concern, this should be discussed with DBW‘s Safeguarding Coordinator to establish if it is a matter that needs to be referred to the statutory services whose responsibility it is to investigate and deal with such cases; namely Police Scotland or Social Work.

DBW Safeguarding Coordinator will take responsibility for assessing the information and, where appropriate, informing the appropriate agency.

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is paramount at all stages and information will only ever be shared on a need to know basis.

Dornoch Beach Wheelchairs will ensure that all staff and volunteers involved in training and recruitment have received appropriate training and support to ensure the full implementation of this policy.
